Surnames: MIX
Submitter: Ann Cales
Today's Date: 4-7-2008
Samuel P. Mix and his wife, Mary K., were residents of Platoro, CO, from the 1890's until they died in the 1920's. Born in New York state, they apparently were lured to the gold fields of Colorado. For a time Sam's brother was editor of a San Luis Valley newspaper. Sam contributed several news articles about Platoro during its glory days. He also served as a sort of mayor and town official in Platoro. He is variously listed as a miner and a mining engineer. His wife served as the Platoro postmistress for a time. They are buried in the Alamosa Cemetery. I would appreciate any information anyone has about Mr. & Mrs. Mix. I would especially like to have pictures of these early-day settlers of that old mining community.

Surnames: VAN HORN
Submitter: Cassandra
Todays Date: 16 FEB 2007
The Van Horn family lived in the Manassas area circa 1920s-1930s. She described the "Sego Dairy Farm" as being just down the road from the house they rented. Her grandparents (Charles James Van Horn, wife Leona Poddy Pinkerton) were renting a home for 13 years from the "Smith" family. Mama, Melba Van Horn, didn't know what type of work her father Frank did in the area but they did move on to the Norton Ranch in approx 1935-7 where Frank helped out. I know she and her brother, Charles James (called CJ) went to school in the area so I am hoping some records or pictures still exist. If anyone has recollections of my family will you please contact me? Thanks so much.

Surnames: LOPEZ
Submitter: Yvonne T. Lopez
Todays Date: 3/22/2005
I am looking for the birthplaces of my maternal grandparents. Carlos Alcario Lopez DOB 1884 & Francisquita Jaramillo Lopez DOB Dec. 1883. Carlos said he was from La China near Lobatos & grandma said she was from Servietta which may have been near Antonito or in New Mexico.

Reply to Yvonne T Lopez query. La China was a name used in jest by a few of the locals, later some people tool it as real. But it is the same as Lobatos, Co, the Post Office. All records can be found in Conejos or Antonito.

Submitter: William L. Stringham

I am the grandson of Erastus S. Christensen, who was the stake president, of the san luis stake , from 1908 to 1914 when he resigned . I've been to manassa three times in the past few years to gather information , about my grandfather's life ( my mother was born in manassa in 1905 ) and the life that existed at that time. I've had the pleasure of meeting some wonderfull people--even some distant relatives still living in the area. Unfortunatelly, I have never been able to find any pictures --in anyone's possession ,that would show the stake presidency---or any other members --including any early day friends or family. I would be forever greatfull if you --or any one you know , could direct me to a place that I might be able to find some pictures.
