Situated in the southwest corner of Colorado, La Plata County is located within the scenic San Juan Mountains. The county was founded on 10 February, 1874 from the counties of Conejos and Lake. In 1876, La Plata lost some area due to the creation of San Juan County to the north. In 1889 Montezuma County was created from the eastern portion of La Plata. La Plata's adjacent counties are:
Early popular industries included ranching, lumber and mining. The area truly became prosperous when the Denver and Rio Grande railway arrived in the area in the early 1880s (Durango was formed at this time to accomodate the railway).
