"Former Shelton postmaster Clyde S. Burkerd, 48, who for many years was engaged in real estate, died in in Hastings Friday at which place he had been a patient for several months. Pneumonia was the cause of death.
Clyde Smith Burkerd was born at Winfield, Kansas on November 1, 1881. He went with his parents to Sterling, Colorado and then grew to manhood at Wood River, Nebraska. He graduated there from high school and then attended Grand Island Business College. In 1903 he came to Shelton and on November 2, 1904 he was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Frazell. Four children were born to this couple, two dying in infancy. The surviving are George W. Burkerd, a pharmacist of Lincoln, Nebraska and Genevieve, still at home.
Mr. Burkerd was active in business, civic and church affairs. He was a loyal booster for those affairs which in his opinion would improve living conditions and be in the best interest and welfare of local people. He was an earnest and conscientious worker. For a number of years he was employed in the Hostetler store. In 1910 he was appointed postmaster but did not accept that position at that time on account of other business aspirations.
He then was associated with A. D. Dickinson in the real estate and insurance business. He also served as village clerk, township clerk, Republican precinct chairman and in other offices.
He was affiliated with A.F.A.M. lodge and was past grand master. He was a Master of the Royal Secret of the 32nd Degree of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Shelton Fire Department, served as Superintendent of the ME Sunday School, President of the Epworth League and was a member of the church board. In 1932 he was again appointed postmaster and served four years but owning to failing health had to give it up.
Besides his wife and children he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Burkerd of Schuyler, Nebraska, four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Enochson, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. Joe Kubik, of Fullerton, Nebraska, Miss May Burkerd at home, and Mrs. P. D. Cox of Bertrand, Nebraska.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Weary at the ME church Sunday AM at 11 o’clock. Members of the Masonic Lodge attended in a body first going to the home and accompanying the body to the church. The lodge will also have charge of the service at the grave.
A quartet composed of W. Hackman, V. Pierce, L. Haug and C. Collis sang "Face to Face", "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Abide with Me". Pallbearers were L. Treat, Roy Haug, O. Hackman, R. Soderstrom, T. Tritt, O. Hayman and Martin Slattery. Interment was in the Wood River Cemetery.

" Kenneth S. Enochson, 40, of Council Bluffs, former, died Friday, Oct. 5, in St Joseph's hospital, Omaha, where he..had been ill for 19 weeks. He was A military guard accompanied the body to Schuyler and funeral. He was born near Schuyler Mar. 23, 1894. He was one of the first young men in Colfax county to enlist in the army during the world ler. On Apr. 4, 1921, he married Lola Burkerd, of Schuyler, a registered nurse, who, with their two sons. Last rites were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Mae Burkerd, 67, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ray Nelson at Oakland, Iowa, May 6. The Rev. A. W. Clarke officiated and burial was made in Schuyler cemetery. A short service at the Svoboda and Son chapel preceded the church service. Pallbearers were W. M. Straube, George F, McKenzie, Quinten En-ochson, Frank Nieman, George French and Ed Burgess. Mae, the daughter of the late Julius W. and Almeda Jones Burkerd, was born Nov. 17, 1883, at Woodriver. In her young years, the family moved to Schuyler. Following the death of her parents, she went to Ravenna where she resided for three years with cousins.
Late in 1950 she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Nelson, in Oakland, Iowa. Mrs. Bukard resumed her maiden name after being divorced.
Besides her daughter, she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kubik cf Lincoln, former Fullerton resident; Mrs. P. D. Cox of Lyons and Mrs. Kenneth Enochson of Prescott, Ariz.; and two grandsons. A brother, Clyde Burkard of Shelton preceded her in death.

In 1949 Jay was admitted to Fort Whipple in Prescott. There he met and married Joan Kubik. Together they had three children: Jeff, Joni and Joe. In his 50-year real estate career, Jay cherished the art of the deal and solving complex problems. Through his photography he found the beauty in nature and adventures across the west. Late in life, happiness was Monday night pizza with the kids and a bowl of ice cream."
