Harold Jefferson Carey 1911–1985

Harold Jefferson Carey, 74, former Shelley resident, died July 22, 1985, at a Lander hospital following a stroke.
He was born March 22, 1911, at Polk, Nebraska, the son of Charles Walter and Flora Bellington Carey, and the fifth child in a family of eight children: Esther, Jonathan, Bess, Ray, Harold, Marie, Earl, and Juanita. The family moved to Scotts Bluff, Nebraska where Harold's Father started a business as a teamster. He expected Harold to handle the load of a grown man and Harold became discouraged and headed west to Laramie, Wyoming. After a time he went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he worked on ranches as a ranch hand. To make a living year around he started baking pies and this little business evolved into running a small hamburger stand located near the present day Wort Hotel. In August 1939, he married Vera E. Clark Wilson at Pinedale. Wyoming. (He was previously married and had three children,Lloyd, Eugene and Cherie.)
They moved to Idaho Falls where he worked as a salesman, and later moved to Salt Lake City where he worked for the Kearns, Utah, Fire Department. There were two children born in Salt Lake, both dying in infancy, Sandra and Raymond. (These two children are buried in Taylor Cemetery east of Shelley, Idaho. Harold and Vera later moved to Lander, where he worked as a salesman. In 1979 they moved to Shelley. Mrs. Carey died in January this year (1985). He subsequently moved back to Lander to be with his family.
Surviving children are Gene, Lloyd, Cherie, Kenneth,and step sons Ronald and Donald Wilson; two brothers, Earl and John, and two sisters, Bess and Marie; and 19 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be in Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley with Bishop Bruce Crockett conducting. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.

" Relatives and friends here wee shocked Sunday night when word of the death of CLYDE CAREY at Wichita Falls, suffered a heart attack and passed away almost instantly. Funeral services were at Floral Heights Christian Church in Wichita Falls Tuesday, and were attended by many from Waurika. Interment was in the Rosemount cemetery at Wichita Falls.
Clyde Carey, brother of Mrs. GUY FITZGERALD of Waurika, lived in the Hastings community when a boy. He was a retired member of the Carey Bros. Oil contracting company and was well known over Texas and Oklahoma. He was a member of the Christian church and the Masonic lodge.
He was 58 years old and survived by Mrs. Carey, a son, a daughter, two sisters and a brother. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald and young daughter WAUNETT and their older daughter Mrs. JACK TAYLOR and Jack attended the funeral."

"Ella May Huffman was born near Franklin, Ind., March 2, 1861. Died at Boulder, Colo., February 20, 1920. She moved with her parents to Kansas when a small child and was united in marriage to John Carey March 5, 1879. To this union were born eight children - two girls and six boys, all living. They are Mrs. John Fagan, of Osage City, Kan., Lora P. Carey, of Boulder, W. E. Carey, of Covington, Oklahoma, Clyde M. Carey of Eagle, J. Lloyd Carey of Ranger, Texas, Leo H., Earl K. and Cecil V. Carey living in Boulder, and all being present at the funeral.
In addition to her husband and children she leaves eight grand children. Three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Roberts, of Enid, Okla., Mrs. Mortie Kinney, of Milford, Utah, both being present at the funeral, and Mrs. Josie Eaton, of Tracy, Calif., who was unable to attend. She was a member of the Congregational church and lived a Christian all her life.
Mrs. Carey with her husband and family moved to Oklahoma in 1891 where she resided the greater part of the time until 1909, when they came to Eagle and remained until three months ago, when they moved to Boulder, where they had a home intending to make that their permanent residence. Death coming as it did was a severe shock to the family and friends, as it was thought that her illness was not serious, death coming as if she were going to sleep.
In the late war three of the sons were in the service, one going to France. During those trying times Mrs. Carey, like most American mothers, did not complain and her expressions were that she was willing and glad that she was able to help the country in this way.
Other members of the immediate family that came from a distance were Mrs. W. E. Carey and her sister, Miss Crace Nixon, of Covington and Enid, Okla., and Ed and Frank Carey, of Reading Kansas, brothers of Mr. Carey.
The funeral was also attended by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Sherman, George Sherman, W. H. Shryack, Miss Helen Fleming and Miss Marion Dickinson, Eagle County, friends friends of the family.
The funeral was held from the family residence and the body laid to rest in the Green Mountain cemetery at Boulder at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, February 25.

Mr. Carey arid family desire that the Enterprise extend to their friends for them their deep appreciation for the flowers and kind words of sympathy and consolation sent them during their dark hour of trial."

October 1920 "Saturday evening at about 7:30 oclock the bunk house on the Clyde Carey ranch on Brush creek went up in flames, due to a defective flue. The entire contents of the cabin were destroyed, the principal loser being Mr. Carey, and next came Charley Buckner, who suffered the loss of ail his clothing and a valuable rifle."

December 1920 "Clyde Carey left for Boulder Tuesday evening where he will spend Christmas. He will go from there to Oklahoma, expecting to be away three or four weeks."

January 1921 "Clyde Carey returned laat week from a trip to Oklahoma where he had been for several weeks. He reports that the boom has gone out of the oil business in that country, and that the business depression is felt very keenly down there. He had considered remaining in Oklahoma all winter, but decided that the ranch was the better place for him."
January 1922 Eagle Colorado "Clyde Carey on Brush creek will hold a public sale on the Metheney ranch on Saturday, February 4, when he will dispose of all of his farming implements, horses, etc. "

Mrs. Bobbitt was en route to Hotchkiss for a visit and her sister left on the late train for her home in the metropolis. While here Mrs. Bobbitt had the pleasant opportunity of a visit with Mrs. R. R. Wonder, the two ladies being former classi mates in Canon City high school."
