Hello - I recently acquired in an antique store in Oregon a wonderful OLD family picture album from the late 1800s - early 1900s. Most of the pictures are identified by name as well as by where they lived. Some names are; Ethel Vance, Colchester, Illinois; Mrs. Hehr, Minnesota; Uncle Orville Haskins (Mass.); Charles & Susan Haskins; Ellen Haskins James; Alton Tuckerman; Aunt Lena Arnold Simmons, Aunt Julia Arnold and Mary Arnold Rochford (R.I.); Andrew & Fred Rochford/Rockford, (R. I.)
I have connected this album to Ethel Vance, daughter of Berton LeRoy Vance and Cora Mae HASKINS. Cora's parents were Alvin/Alvan Haskins and Margaret (Maggie)Arnold. Alvin's father was Joseph Clark Haskins, a cabinet maker from Massachusetts. Cora's siblings were Ellen, John and Charles. There are pictures of Ellen and John Haskins, as well as aunts uncles and cousins.

In 1930 San Jose, California, Alfred is an auto mechanic, Ethel in a can company, with Arthur, Alice, and son Joyce.
Alfred and Ethel are alone in 1940 San Jose.
In 1957 San Jose, Alf A. (Ethel I) live at 347 N. 10th, Arth A. (Lora D) live at 14580 Ross, Joyce A. (Amy) is a welder at a machine and body works, and they live at 15340 Charmeran>
In 1970 San Jose, Alf and Ethel live at 347 N. 10th, Joyce and Amy still at 15340 Charmeran.

Lloyd Alvan "Sonny" Vance 1928-1938 is buried in Sterling.

Emma May (Vance) Wilson 1904-1997 is buried in Sterling, # 54419649.

ELMORE

In 1930 Logan County, Elmore is married to Mary 22, with Elmore A. 3 and Virginia L.1.
In 1940 Logan County, Elmore is a railroad worker, 37, Mary 32 Nebraska, Elmore A. 13, Virginia L. 11, Loretta 8, Herbert C. 3, and Delvert C. ten months.

Elmore L. Vance 1902-1980 is buried in Yamhill County, Oregon, # 144938892, with mary E. 1907-1987.

LENA
When Alice (Newman) Mock died in 2008 "When she was 11 years old, Alice joined the Assembly of God Church in Fleming, Colorado, because she liked their singing. She became very active in the church, helping in many ways. She also met her lifelong friend there, Lena (Vance) Harms, whom she stayed in touch throughout their lives. "

Lester William Harms, Paoli, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at the age of 87.
Lester was born February 26, 1918, at a home south of Fleming, to William and Susie Harms. He grew up on the same farm with his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
He married Lena V. Vance June 22, 1938 in Julesburg. He farmed all of his life, the last two years from his armchair. Fifty-seven years ago he moved his wife and four children from a farm south of Sterling to their present home.
Lester loved to farm, hunt and fish. He attended the Holyoke Assembly of God Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wilbur; and his son, LeRoy Gene.
Survivors include: his wife of 67 years; son Walter L. and wife Marcy, New Braunfels, Texas; daughters Ryvona B. Stephens and husband David, Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Judi Deusterman and husband Daniel, Holyoke; daughter-in-law, Carmen (Harms) Brand, Ogallala, Nebraska; sisters, Ella Grauberger, Las Vegas, Nevada and Ethel Lambert, George West, Texas; brothers, Alva Harms, Loveland, Harry Harms, Fleming, and William Harms, Jr. Olympia, Washington. Nine grandchildren and 23 great and great great grandchildren also survive him.
Services for Lester were held Friday, April 8 at 10 a.m. at the Holyoke Assembly of God with Pastor Bill Beard officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Sterling. Gerk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lena Violet (Vance) Harms, age 94, of Holyoke, died July 23, 2013, in Holyoke. Lena was born Feb. 12, 1919, to Burton LeRoy and Cora May (Haskins) Vance at her home in rural Fleming.
She attended school through the eighth grade. She later became a telephone operator and worked at this job through her teenage years. Lena married Lester W. Harms, whom she was happily married to for 66 years. Together they lived and farmed near Paoli for 60-plus years, raising their children, LeRoy Gene, Walter LaMoine, Ryvonna and Judi.
A member of the Assembly of God Church, Lena served as a Sunday School teacher. On the farm she would happily stop what she was doing to attend to the needs of Lester and her children, always making time for them. She loved to read and crochet. In her later years she kept her spunky spirit and good humor. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Lester; and sons, LeRoy and Walter.
Surviving her are her daughters, Ryvonna Stephens and husband Dave of Emmett, Idaho, and Judi Deusterman and husband Dan of Holyoke; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held July 25 at the Holyoke Cemetery with Bryan Kroeger officiating.

DONALD

Donald Paul Vance is in the army in 1940, stationed at Laramie, Wyoming.
He was born at Fleming May 3, 1917, and died December 26, 1991.

Elizabeth Browns 1809-1886 is buried in Clarke County # 13762893.
So is August Browns 1808-1874 # 13762889.


Louis Warren Vance registered for WWI with a Merino, Colorado address, farming, born April 9, 1878.
In 1920 Logan County, L.W. and Della are farming, and her mother Druzilla Browns 76 widowed, Indiana, is living with them.
They're farming alone in 1930 and 1940 in Logan County.
Louis W. Vance 1878-1958 # 57287800 and Della E. (Browns) Vance 1883-1971 are buried in Sterling.

Arthur F. Vance cash-claimed a quarter in 9, 6N 54W in 1913 - that would be forty miles southwest of Burton.

Russell Scott married Margaret Crawford July 11, 1920, recorded in Logan County.

Arthur T. Vance's inheritance tax was recorded in Logan County May 31, 1921.

She might be the same one that claimed land in Logan County, although we have no proof of the connection.

Laura P. Vance proved up 200 acres in 10N 55W in 1920, and another 120 acres in 1925 near it in Weld County 11N 56W.
