Range - Township Map
The map above is provided to aid your location of Morgan County range-township property descriptions. The county is six townships square as shown by the green township grid above. Township numbering is referenced to the "Baseline - 40° North" and ranges from Township 1 North along the south border of the county to Township 6 North along the north border. Range numbering is from Range 55 West to Range 60 West and references the 6th US Land Survey Principal Meridian in Eastern Kansas.
From the map above, Wiggins is in Township 3 North, Range 60 West, abbreviated as T3N R60W. Hillrose is in T4N R55W.
Each of the townships in the county is further divided into thirty-six 640 acre sections numbered as shown in the diagram at left.
Subdivision of land within each section is usually described as fractional parts of the section. E.G. The southeast one-fourth of section one - describing a 160 acre "quarter section." Another example description would be - the north one-half of the southwest one-fourth of section eight - describing a 80 acre plot.
When Colorado became a state in August 1876, ownership of sections 16 and 36 in each township was transferred to the State Land Board. Money raised by the Board from the lease or sale of section 16, the "School Section," is used to support public education. Money generated by the lease or sale of section 36 goes into the state general fund.
