Ralph B. Ewegen of Amherst was born April 5, 1909 in Crete, Nebraska. He died Tuesday, June 21, 1994 on his farm immediately north of Amherst when a farm mower he was servicing fell on him after a jack gave way. He was 85.
Ewegen was raised on the farm near Amherst, He graduated as valedictorian of Phillips County High School in 1926 and worked as a salesman before returning to run the farm after the death of his father Rudolph in 1946. His mother Josephine Hier Ewegen died in 1962.
Ralph was married to Louise Anderson on May 11, 1940 in Newcastle, Nebraska.
The Ewegen family farm has been recognized by the Colorado Historical Society as one of Colorado’s pioneer “century farms” that has been operated by the same family for more than 100 years. For 59 of those years, until age 84, Ralph was the principal operator. Retiring in 1993 after a heart bypass operation, he continued overseeing the farm until his death last Tuesday.
Survivors include Louise Ewegen of Holyoke; sister Viola Brase of Amherst; sons Bob Ewegen, a Denver journalist and Eugene Feldman, a retired Army master sergeant now living in Enterprise, Alabama; daughter Sandra Olsen-Baulch, a professional artist of Genesee; sister-in-law Marie Ewegen of Greeley; grandchildren Leilani Olsen, Michael Olsen, Misty Ewegen, Shane Ewegen, Llani Ray and Gilbert Lockhart; and one great grandson.
A rosary vigil was held Friday, June 24 at Saint Patrick’s Church. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, June 25, 1994 at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Holyoke with Fr. Neal Pfister officiating. Interment followed at Holyoke Memorial Park.
