Donald Hubert Matthews, 87, of Newberg, passed away quietly at his daughter’s home in Dallas, Polk County, Oregon on Saturday March 12, 2016 surrounded by family.
Donald was born November 19, 1928 in Denver Colorado to Hubert and Alice Matthews. He grew up on a farm out of Otis Colorado and went to High School at Lone Star High School. He went on to college at Colorado State University and graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1951.
Donald joined the Armed Forces and served his country from 1952 to 1953 in the Korean War as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He returned to civilian life after receiving the Purple Heart in combat.
He went to work as a county extension agent in Montrose Colorado where he met his future wife Billie Mildes. From Colorado he moved to Oregon where he raised a family and worked for Portland General Electric until he retired in 1987. He lived in Newberg from 1962 until his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife. Donald is survived by his children, son Skip Matthews of Heppner Oregon and Laura Young of Dallas, Oregon, grandchildren Megan and Danielle Morton and Whitney Haguewood and Donald Matthews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 19th 3:00 p.m. at the Newberg Seventh Day Adventist Church. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
