James and Hannah (Williamson) White, north of Eckley

In 1880 Smith County, Kansas, James White is farming 37, born in Scotland, with Hannah 32 England, Alexander 11 England, Daniel 9, England, Margaret A. 7 England, James 4 England, and George 1, Kansas.

In 1891 James and Alexander White did cash claims in Section 17, 2N 46W - about three miles northeast of the Ettel's claim.  And in 1894 a James White did a cash claim touching the Section 17 claim.   So those are almost certainly a father and two sons, claiming land and then going back to Kansas.

In 1895 Chautauqua County, Kansas, James White is 53, born in Scotland, H. White 47 in England, A.E. N. W. 27 in England - a farmer, Daniel 25 in England - a plasterer?, James 18 England - a farmer, George 16 Kansas, John 13 Kansas, A. C. 10 Kansas, and W. E? 4 Colorado. The first five came to Chautauqua County from Colorado, the next three from Kansas.

James and Hannah are there in 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1925.  In 1900 and 1910 they have William ,  born in Colorado January 24, 1898 per SSDI, but August 1891 in the 1900 census..  He died September 1957.

In 1900 Chautauqua County, James 67 and Hannah 62 have only William E. 19.

James 1842-1929 # 14335060 and Hannah 1848-1932 # 14335053 share a tombstone in Greenwood Cemetery, Chautauqua County.

Seeking information on Alexander Edmondson Williamson (Alex) WHITE, b. 1848. He lived in Imperial Texas in 1908 and according to an article from the "History of Imperial Texas", was an Englishman named "Alphabet" WHITE and was called the founder of Imperial Texas. He passed away in 1958 in San Angelo Texas and is buried in Buena Vista Texas. Any information on him or his parents John White b. 1843 Scotland and Hannah McWilliamson b. 1848 England would be appreciated.

I will try and answer the inquiries, about this country, in your paper if you will allow me the space, so that everybody can get at the facts. We have a fine resorvoir to store the water in, and ditches and laterals to every piece of ground under cultivation, and the land is being cleared and put into cultivation right along. I have 2?0 acres all in cotton this year. Had a tenant farmer farm it and he gave me one-fourth of the cotton at the ??for rent. He has gathered 12 bales from 15 acres of it, and will get about 4 bales more from the first picking. The cotton has brought a little over $45.00 per bale, so that I have received a little over 3135.00 rent already, and cotton is cheap this year. Then there will be about 4 bales more at the first picking; besides the seed of which we have got over six tons already. Then there will be the second picking, and we expect to get 4 or 5 bales at the second picking, besides the seed. So that, the returns from the 20 acres will be about $900.00 for the cotton and $200.00 for the seed, which is not bad for the first crop planted on the place, as it will pay me about 275.00 rent for the first year. I can also show you land that, has grown two crops this year. Oats made from 40 to 45 bushels to the acre; after harvest planted to maize which made 30 to 35 bushels to the acre . I am your old friend and neighbor,
(Signed) A. E. W. WHITE, Imperial, Texas, Pecos County.
Excursions will leave this county May 7th for the Pecos Valley and will be glad to have you with us. It means money to you to get this land while being offered at the price made and terms are only one-?i?th the first year; this means a very small payment, for we sell Si from ten acres up
