John E. and Laura A. (Wiles) Ryan, Ira F. and Stella (Ryan) Halling

In 1860 Harrison County, Indiana, Eddy Ryan is 3, with J.W. 43 and Lucinda 35.

In 1870 Harrison County, John is 53, Lusinda 49, Henrietta 22, Susann 18, Lusinda 16, John E. 13, Minnia 11, and Almedia 8.

Edward Ryan married Laura Wiles September 13, 1874 in Effingham County, Illinois.
In 1880 Effingham County, Illinois, John E. is 23, Laura 20, Charlie H. 2, and William three months. Laura's mother Elizabeth Wiles 69 is with them.

In 1900 Yuma, Edward born Nov 1857 is a railroad section foreman, married 23 years to Laura June 1859 Illinois. Tell L. Feb 1880, Bertha M. Feb 1882, and Stella E. Feb 1885 were born in Illinois, Earl Jan 1891, Wilmer E. Dec 1893, and Chester H. Oct 1899 were born in Colorado. Boarding with them are two Deering laborers.

Ira F. Halling cash-claimed a quarter in 26, 3N 48W in 1908.

In 1910 Yuma, Edward is still a foreman, 52, Laura 50, Earl 19, Elmer 16, and Chester 11.
The sons are all farm laborers.

John is widowed in 1920 Yuma, farming in 2N 48W with son Lucian J. 35.

November 14, 1929

John, born 1888 in Hayes County, Nebraska, died July 19, 1895 in Yuma.

The obituary says Charles was the father, but it was John.


In 1900 Dallas County, Iowa, Ira "Holling" is a farm laborer, born July 1882 in Iowa, with Lewis 49 and Ada 35. Alva 16, Harr6 , and Lois 6.

"Died - - April 27, 1908, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Ryan, Stella E. Halling aged 23 years and eight months. She was born January 25, 1885 at Effingham, Illinois and came with her parents to Yuma in 1890. She was converted and joined the M.E, Church with which she has been a faithful worker ever since. She was United in Marriage, October 31, 1907, to Ira F. Halling whom with father, mother, five brothers and one sister she leaves to mourn; one brother being in heaven to await her. A bright and shining light has gone out from our home. S.C. Services were held Thursday in the M.E. church conducted by Rev. John, internment made in the Yuma Cemetery. "

In 1910 Fort Collins, Colorado, Marie Harding is 24, born in Germany, in a rooming house, immigrating in 1890.

Ira F. Halling married Marie Harding August 29, 1910, recorded in Denver.
Reverend S.B. Warner of Denver performed the ceremony.

In 1920 Missoula County, Montana, Ira is farming, 37, married to Marie 33 born in Germany, immigrating in 1890.

In 1930 Missoula County, Ira is 46, Marie 44, and her brother Carl Clouse 20 born in Colorado is with them.
The Clouse family was in Weld and Larimer Counties, Colorado in 1910 and 1920.
In 1910 Larimer County, Carl is six months old, with parents George 52 and Katie 46. Caroline is 11, born in Nebraska, Arthur 2 Colorado. With them are Katie's kids - Alice Harding 16 Nebraska and Sam 13 Nebraska.
When Sam Harding registered for WWI in San Francisco, he said he was born Sept 2, 1897 at Omaha, Nebraska, father in Russia, and his nearest relative was Mrs. Marie Clouse of Windsor, Colorado.

Ira and Marie are still in Missoula County in 1940, with a hired hand.
Ira 1882-1959 is buried in Missoula # 84558894, with Marie A. 1885-1981 (she might have married a Harding..)


December 29, 1899 " Charlie Ryan, who is holding a position in the B. & M. depot at McCook, spent Christmas with the old folks at home. "
Charles Ellsworth Ryan and Elizabeth Ida Deering.

In 1900 McCook, Charles born Sept 1877 in Illinois, is just married to Elizabeth May 1878 Nebraska.

October 10, 1902 McCook "Charles Ryan, who lives just across the state line in Kansas, lost his oldest son by diphtheria, Monday."

Because the 1910 census of McCook says Elizabeth has had only one child, still living, th Kansas one must be another one.
In 1910 Charles and Elizabeth have Harold E. 8, born in Nebraska.
In 1920 McCook, still a railroad conductor, they have Harold 17 and son Gayle 8.

September 14, 1944 "C. E. Ryan of McCook, Nebraska spent the week end in Yuma visiting relatives and friends."

Charles E. Ryan 1877-1955 is buried in Yuma # 59792236, with Elizabeth I. Ryan 1880-1943.

Harold is buried in Fairmount # 91134458, 1902-1946.

April 11, 1957 "Mrs. Pansy Viola Ryan, daughter-in-law of the late C.E. Ryan and Yuma and McCook, died in Denver last week. She leaves one son Harold and a daughter-in-law. Her husband preceded her in death more than ten years ago."
Pansy is also buried in Fairmount 1905-1957 # 91134472.
Gayle 1911-1977 is buried in Gering, Nebraska # 84514637.


In 1910 Huerfano County, Colorado, Scott Hamsher is a farm laborer, 30 born in New York, with Bertha 28 a housekeeper for H.$. and I. Company. Violet is 5, born in Nebraska, Melva 3 and Lola 1 born in Colorado.

1915 Yuma "For Sale - One ten-foot Monitor mill and steel tower. Inquire of Scott Hamsher."


In 1920 Yuma, Scott is a carpenter, 39, Bertha 38, Violet 15, Melva 13, Lola 11 and Lillian 4.

Bertha May (Ryan) Hamsher 1882-1956 is buried in Riverside (Same cemetery at Chester) # 80667622, with Scott Traxler Hamsher 18801967.

June 7, 1956

1917 Yuma "For sale or Trade - Avery 12-25 plow outfit. See Earl Ryan, three miles north of Yuma."

December 20, 1918 "Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ryan came in from Egbert, Nebraska for a few days visit with relatives. Mr. Ryan was recently injured in a runaway and is complelled to use crutches as the result."

In 1920 Washington County, Colorado, Earl is a tire repairer in Otis, 29, with Bertha M. 25 born in Nebraska. Merle H. is 3.
Bertha, daughter of B.M. Wear, Jr. and Sylvia Brewer, was born Oct 15, 1894 in Nebraska, and died Nov 14, 1968 in Pamona California.

Earl Alfred Ryan, born January 27, 1891, died July 27, 1956 in San Bernardino County.

Their son Warren F. Ryan 1921-2009 is buried in Riverside National # 128550891, U.S. Navy WWII
Paul Bartley Ryan 1923-2000 is buried in Covina, California # 108703311, Coast Guard WWII.

William Elmer Ryan registered for WWI in Yuma, born there Dec 18, 1893, married with a child, working for Dawes & Jackson.

In 1920 Yuma, next to sister Bertha Hamsher, Elmer 26 and Lulu B. 25 born in Iowa, have Iola M. 6 born in Nebraska.

May 1922 "Elmer Ryan, who now calls Grand Junction his home, came in on the midnight train Monday to attend to business matters and visit with relatives and friends for a few days."

William died June 1, 1976 in Riverside County, California.


L.T. Ryan 1880-1941 is buried in Yuma # 59792241.
"Lucien Tell Ryan was born February 20, 1880, at Effingham, Illinois and departed this life near Yuma on October 27, 1941, at the age of 61 years, eight months and seven days. He came to Yuma in 1880 and later went to Washington where he was united in marriage to Maude Curry who preceded him in death. To this union one child was born --Mrs. Iona Russell of Everett, Washington. He also leaves to mourn his passing one sister -- Mrs. Scott Hamsher of Palm Springs, California, C. H. Ryan whose whereabouts is unknown. Three grandchildren and a host of friends. Relatives who came to Yuma to attend the final rites were Mrs. Iona Russell, Mrs. Bertha Hamsher, Charles Ryan and Elmer Ryan. " J.E. Ryan homestead

Chester was in Denver in 1920, 21, a laborer , living in a lodging house.

Chester Harold Ryan 1898-1947 USNR WWII, is buried in Riverside County, California # 29685026.
