Lewis William Carle and Mina Carle

One tree said Lewis was born in Marshall County, Kansas, Mina in 1888 in Smith County, Kansas, and they married in 1906 in Smith County.

Lewis homesteaded two quarters in 5N 47W, one in 1913, the other in 1914.  They were a mile north of the Candacy Ford post office.  For the northwest of Section 24, witnesses were Allie B. Breisford, Simon H. Long, John Y. Eckman, and George E. Bates, all of Ford.

In 1910 - following Candacy, Lewis 26 has been married four years to Maria, 21.  They have five-month-old Mable E.  .  Next family is the John Eckman - so the census taker was going north from Ford to the county line.

1913 Smith Center, Kansas Pioneer "We notice Lewis Carle, of Yuma county, Colorado, in our town.  He is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carle."

In 1915 Lewis was appointed postmaster at Ford.

Lewis registered for WWI with a Wages address - so he was going there for mail .  He said he was born September 16, 1882.

April 1916 "Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Carle and family, Mrs. F. J. Carle and Miss Carrie Carle of Smith Center visited with Rev and Mrs. J.O. Borton Sunday"  Belleville, Kansas

In 1920 they're in Smith County, Kansas, with Mabel 10, Bernice 6, Ralph 4, and Everett 2.


Louise lrene Carle, 70, Smith Center, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 1996, at her daughter's home in Beloit.

! Mrs. Carle was born Louise LoŁan on Aug. 6, 1926, at Beloit and was a lifetime area resident. She was a housewife and a member of First Baptist Church, Smith Center.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph in 1985; and a daughter, Catherine in 1992.

 Survivors include three sons, Bernard Johnson and Daniel Carle, both of Smith Center, and Uarth Carle of Virginia Beach, Va.; four daughters, Barbara Baetz of Smith Center, Irene Brocka of Hawaii, Esther Brown of California and Sandy Leach of Rippey, Iowa; four brothers, Harold Logan of Downs, Charles Logan and Art Logan, both of Wichita, and Herman Logan of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Dorothy  Taylor of Wichita and Emily Davis of Portland, Ore.; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grand-children.

 The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Simmons Chapel, Smith Center, John Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.
