Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

William and Walter Compton

In 1870 Venango County Pennsylvania, Walter and Hannah Compton are both 46.  They have James A. 18, William R. 13,

In 1880 Platte County, Nebraska Walter is 57, married to Anna, 56.  With them are W.R. 21 and Victoria Owen, 13,  (step ? or adop?) daughter.

 William and Walter did cash claims in section 3, 4N 48W in 1891, on the "correction line road"

In 1899 "Grandma Compton is visiting at the home of E. Loring's"

 

 

In 1900 north Yuma County  William born April 1860 in Pennsylvania, , has been married 10 years to Hattie M. , born July 1861 in Iowa.  She's had three kids, all living.  Walter M. August 1890 , Charly C, Dec 1891, and Bosth R. May 1894 - all in Colorado.

Next household is Walter, born October 1823 in New York, married 52 years to Hannah, October 1824 in Pennsylvania - three kids, one living.  With them is James - Nov 1830 in New York, widowed.

Also in 1900 W.R. Compton was scheduled to give an address at the Old Settler Reunion in Eckley.

1901 "Miss Owen, teacher in the Intermediate department (Yuma schools), visited at the home of her sister, Mrs. W.R. Compton, the first of the week."

Walter Compton, a pioneer of Yuma County, passed away Wednesday night at his home a few miles north of Yuma.

Mr. Compton was born in Genesee County, New York seventy nine years ago. He and Mrs. Compton took up their residence in Yuma County about thirteen years ago, with their only child W. R. Compton, at his sheep ranch about sixteen miles north of Yuma.

Our heart goes out to the poor old wife, the companion of many years, the light of her life has gone out, and to the son, relatives, and friends of the deceased.

Services will be conducted at their home today by Elder Curtis after which the loved one will be laid to rest in the Yuma Cemetery.

In 1901 W.R. Compton was running on the Republican ticket for Yuma County  treasurer.

1905 "Word was received here (Yuma) of the critical illness of Walter Compton, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Compton formally (sic) of this place but now of Denver."

James is with daughter Ella Hoy and her husband Samuel in 1910 Johnson County, Kansas.

William Henry Compton, March 1, 1839 - October 28, 1927 is in the Yuma cemetery

Elizabeth "Wife of Jonathan Compton Died Nov 22, 1896 aged 89 Yrs 5 Ms 8 Ds"  is in the Haxtun Cemetery.
