The Card families - Albert, Charlie, George, Levi, and Stephen

Stephen Card was born Dec 25, 1886 at Rockland, Colorado to Charley B. Card and Merry A. Soepper.

In 1900 Weld County, Colorado,Stephen is 14, living with the Eric Larson family.

Levi E. and Albert cash-claimed adjoining quarters in 3N 47W in 1891 - sections 26 and 27

Charlie Card cash-claimed a quarter in 5N 48W in 1891 - fifteen miles straight north of Yuma. He very well could have gotten his mail at Rockland - although in Logan County, it could have been the nearest post office. Cahrlie cash-claimed another quarter in 12, 6N 47W - just a few miles away in Phillips County.

A few miles east of Levi and Albert, George proved up a homestead in 31, 3N 46W

September 20, 1907 " Stephen Card and Miss Meier, both of this place, were married at Wray one week ago yesterday by County Judge J . S . Hendrie , Miss Meier is the of Henrv Meier who came to Yuma county in the early days and has resided east of town since that time . May the young beoplc live a peaeefnil and prosperous life is the wish of the Pioneer "
Stephen Card registered for WWI in Yuma, born Dec 25, 1886, an auto mechanic, with Gertrude Fanny.

1910 Yuma County Stephen Card, 24, Illinois, married two years to Gertrude, 20, West Virginia.  They have George, twenty months, born in Colorado, and Sena Meier - Gertrude's sister, 14.

In 2N 47W, section 11, Stephen Card homesteaded in 1912.

June 1919 "Stephen Card and family left for Evergreen, Colorado this week, near which place he has taken up a homestead in the mountains."

In 1920 Kit Carson County Stephen is married to Fannie G, 29, West Virginia.  They have George W. 11, Clarence W.. 8 and James R. 6.

In 1930 Kit Carson County they have Clarence and James, and in 1940 are in Denver, where Stephen is a night watchman.

Stephen 1886 -1943 and Fanny G. 1890 -1967 are in the Vona Colorado cemetery


Ray Card married Cora Meier January 17, 1910, recorded in Yuma County.

In 1910 Yuma Ray Card, 21, born in Colorado, is married to Cora W. 16, also Colorado.   She's most likely the orphan of Henry and Matilda Meier.

 Ray Card, dying in 1914, is in the Yuma Cemetery.

Cora Card, 24,  married Roy Mellen, 26,  October 18, 1917. in Wray.  Judge I.L. Barker performed the ceremony.

In 1920 Akron Cora W. Mellen is 26, widowed.  Vera Card, 9, Maud Card 7, Robert Card 6, and Mary Mellen thirteen months

Cora M. Mellen married James H. Evans December 7, 1920

In 1930 Cora is in Denver, married to James H. Evans.  Vera Card is 19, Mary Evans is 11, Harvey Evans is 8, and James F. Evans is 6,'

Vera Gertrude Card married Gaston LeRoy Beville October 26, 1931, and divorced him in Denver 1935. 

So she could be the Vera G. Card marrying Harold T. Johnson May 20, 1937.

In 1940 Denver a Vera Johnson 29, born in Colorado, is a waitress.  Harold T. Johnson , 32, Sweden, is a cook.

In 1940 Denver Cora is widowed again.  Harvey Evans 19, Fred Evans 16, and George Evans 7


In 1885 Seward County Nebraska, George is 1, Nebraska, brother William 8 Wisconsin, with Charles R 28 and Emma 27

In 1910 Wichita, Kansas, a single Charles B. Card, 51, Illinois matches that.

1904 "Lost, Strayed, or stolen - One George Card, when last seen was following the telephone line west of Yuma with his 10:40 nag and best girl."

1905, Eckley section "George Card was put down and out for a few minutes during the ball game Sunday afternoon.  He caught a fly ball with his face instead of his hands."

1914 "A.D. Young sold his billiard parlor to George Card this week, the latter taking possession Tuesday."

1915 "a deal was closed last Saturday whereby George Card traded his pool hall business to Art Hackler for a 160-acre farm, fifteen miles northwest of Yuma"

1914 "If you have corn to shell, see George Card.  First class work."

July 24, 1914 "Ray Card, who was very sick, was taken to a Denver hospital Wednesday by his brother, Stephen Card.  The young man died yesterday."

Longtime Kit Carson County resident, Bessie Mae Card passed away on January 4, 2010 at the Lincoln Community Nursing Home in Hugo. She was 98 years old.

Bessie was born on October 3, 1911 Osage City, Kansas to Charlie J. and Eutella G. (Stouder) Miller. She was one of two children.

In March of 1918, Bessie’s parents sold their farm in Osage City, and moved to a farm 10 miles south of Vona, Colorado. They lived there for three years, when her parents then bought a farm 7 ½ miles south of Vona. Bessie attended a country school south of Vona, and in 1929, she graduated from Vona High School.

(1927 Yuma "George Card drove over from Stratton, Colorado to visit Henry Meier and family. Mr. Card is a brother of Mrs. Meier."

"Mrs. Henry Meier returned Friday from a week's stay in Yuma whee she had been caring for Mrs. George Card \, who had been very ill."
On September 27, 1930, Bessie married George W. Card at the family farm south of Vona. They knew each other for years. They were neighbors as well as classmates. To this union five children were born; four boys and one girl. In her younger years, Bessie attended the Baptist Church. Bessie worked as a homemaker for a good part of her life, she also worked as a cook at the Burlington Elementary School.

Bessie had several hobbies. She enjoyed crocheting, doing oil painting, and gardening and has always enjoyed watching baseball games and the Price is Right.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband George in 1979, one son Robert Lee Card, her sister Alice Burckholder, two granddaughters Sherry and Sharleen Card and three grandsons, Kenny Stolz, and Wade and Travis Card.

She is survived by three sons Stephen Card and his wife Hazel of Strasburg, Colorado, George Card and his wife Linda also of Strasburg, Colorado, Rudy Card and his wife Opal of Ely, Nevada, and her daughter Melba Stolz and her husband Ken of Phoenix, Arizona. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

Bessie Mae is buried in Burlington # 89378923.

George Wm. Card 1908-1979 is buried in Burlington # 8937879.

In 1910 Hayes County, Nebraska, John W. Fleming is 36, born in Illinois, married five years to Jessamine E. 25 born in Oregon. They have John W. 4, Earl J. 2, and Beulah M. eleven mohnths, all three born in Nebrfaska.

In 1915 the Yuma County commissioners approved an allowance for Jesse Fleming under the Mothers Compensation Act.
George Card, born June 8, 1884, registered for WWI with an address of Benkelman, Nebraska, with nearest relative Jessamine CArd of Benkelman.

Jesse E. Fleming and John W. Fleming divorced in Yuma County June 14, 1916.
Jesse E. Card, formerly Jesse E. Fleming, proved up 280 acres in 2S 43W in 1918.
John W. Fleming was a laborer on the railroad when registering for WWI. He was born Dec 29, 1873, and his nearest relative was G. . Fleming of Max, Nebraska.
John is buried in Hitchcock County, Nebraska, 1873-1943 # 70314063.

In 1920 Yuma County, Lansing precinct, George Card is 34, Jessa 33, with Beulah M. Fleming 9, and Melba A. Fleming 6.
In 1885 Utica, Seward County, Nebraska, George is 1, with Charles 28, Emma 27, and William 8.
George Card born June 1884 in Nebraska, a farm laborer for John Sedgwick in Weld County, Colorado in 1900.

Jessie E. Card and George Card divorced in Yuma County February 14, 1925. He might be the George W. Card who married Julia D. Work in Denver December 8, 1925.
George Card married Millie Elizabeth Olson in Idaho Falls, Idaho November 29, 1929.
In 1930 Fremont County, George is 42, Elizabeth 29, with Maurene 8, Faye G. 2, and twin May L. 2.

George is in Fremont County, Idaho in 1940, working at a fish hatchery, with Millie E. 39, Maruine 18, Glenda F. 13, and Lenora M. 12, all four females born in Idaho.

In 1942 he was living in Boulder City, Nevada, born at Utica nebraska. "Not in correspondence with relatives."

George, born June 8, 1884 at Sidney, Nebraska, died Jan 22, 1969 in Las Vegas , Nevada, son of Charles Benjamin Card and Emma Lipper. His spouses were Jessa Scott (Divorced( and Elizabeth Olson.
He's buried in Fremont County - noted that he died in 1969, buried in 1972 # 8852929.
M. Elizabeth O. Sollock 1900-1975 is buried in Fremont County # 10289367.

In 1930 Denver, Jessa Card, widowed, 43 born in Oregon is a dishwasher in a restaurant. Earl Fleming, 23, son, born in Nebraska, is a chef in a restaurant. Her Uncle George Burch, 56 widowed, born in Iowa is a grocer.
Earl J. Fleming is also in the 1930 census in Holyoke, working in a resataurant, living with John W. Fleming, 56. In 1931, Mrs. Jessa E. Card is a housekeeper, living at 2669 S. Lincoln.
Jessie E. "Court" married Richard H. Neal in Denver June 7, 1932.

In 1940 Denver, Jessie Card is 50, born in Oregon, widowed, sewing for the W.P.A.
In 1945, Mrs. Jessie E. Card is living at 2402 S. Cherokee in Denver.

Jessa Scott was born January 8, 1884 in Baker County, Oregon to Charles D. Scott and Elma E. Billings,

She died Janaury 29, 1959, and is buried in Yuma # 74264341.

In 1940 Spokane, Washington, Harold Belcher is a clerk in the quartermaster department, 33, Melba 27.
She was in San Diego in 1935.

There's a Harold Ray Belcher 1906-1983 buried in Cleburne County, Arkansas, with Melba A. 1913-1986 # 94295065

John C. Conoboy (Beulah M. ) is a driver for Yellow Cab in 1959 San Diego, California.
John C. Conoboy, born May 14, 1911 in Washington, died in San Diego California May 29, 1975.
He was a pharmacist's mate in 1940 San Diego, single.

In 1951 Glendale, California, John and Louise Fleming run the Fleming's Coffee Shop at 1160 N. Pacific. They live at 1329b N. Columbus avenue.

John W. Fleming, born Dec 3, 1905, died in Los Angeles County January 10, 1966, mother's maiden name Scott.
He's buried in Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, # 86098096, next to Louise E. (Wolfe) Fleming # 86098101. She was born Jun 25, 1910 in Pomona, Illinois to Richar d T. and Tempa E. Wolfe.
Beulah Conoboy, born Dec 29, 1909 in California, died August 1978, lasat residence Cleburne Arkansas.


In 1940 Holyoke, Colorado, Earl Fleming is 32, born in Nebraska, a laborer on a chicken farm. His father John 67 born in Illinois is with thim.
SSDI has Earl Fleming born Jun 27, 1907, dying January 1978, last residence Natrona Wyoming.
