Verna Mae (Hansen) Miller was born June 12, 1927, the eldest daughter of 10 children born to Alfred and Jennie Hansen of the Lone Star community, Washington County, Colorado. She was born in Yuma, Colorado, at her grandmother Hansen's home. She grew up on the homestead with her older brother LaVerne, younger sisters, Lorna, Beaulah, Eunice and Donna and younger brothers Jerry, Bob, Don and Max. Verna graduated from high school in 1945 from Lone Star School. In 1947 Verna started work at Mustain's store in Yuma. She stayed with her Uncle Pete Hansen and Aunt Mildred in Yuma, helping out around the house and at the Hansen Brother's Garage on Main Street where they sold Hudson cars and Allis-Chalmer tractors. It was there where Verna met Elmer Miller. Following a short engagement, Elmer and Verna were married in 1948 by the Justice of the Peace in Ft. Morgan, Colorado. Elmer & Verna moved into a house at 219 N. Buffalo Street in Yuma where Elmer ran a radiator shop. They raised three children: Elden, Deanna and Wesley. Verna devoted her life to taking care of Elmer, her children and her extended family. She was the one everyone could always count on to help out. She did mending, ironed clothes and enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Verna passed away at the age of 84 at the Yuma Life Care Center on July 12, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer who passed away in 1994.
