Donald H. McGinnis 1920 2013
Donald Howard McGinnis, 92, of Boise, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at a Boise hospital. Don was born in Wray, Colorado on December 22, 1920. When he was a boy he moved to Middleton, Idaho. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served on the USS Balch (DD 363) Porter Class Destroyer. While Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941 The USS Balch as a member of the Carrier Group Enterprise was returning from Wake Island when the Group encountered a storm which caused a delay in arrival at Pearl Harbor Naval station the morning post the attack of a few hours prior to being returned to sea. Don's navel career included rescue operations with the USS Yorktown (CV-5) at the Battle of Midway and participating in seven other major Pacific campaigns. Don married Doris Taber (from Middleton) in 1943. Doris passed in 1999. Don retired from the Navy in 1960, and joined the Federal Aviation Agency working in Flight Weather Service. He retired from government service and the Federal Aviation Agency in 1980's. Don later married Carol Thornburgh in 2001. They loved traveling and playing Bridge. Don is survived by his wife Carol; son, Donn McGinnis; stepsons, Bruce and Craig Thornburgh; step daughter, Elaine; grandchildren, Kelly and Shaun McGinnis, and two step grandchildren, Katie and Ryan Thornburgh. Don lived an enjoyable and productive 92 years. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, 518 N. 8th Street, Boise, Idaho conducted by The Very Reverend Richard Demarest, Dean. A reception will follow the service, followed by a motor funeral procession to the graveside interment service at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4225 E. Fairview Ave. in Meridian.
