Wray - June 1944
Mrs. Mary Hill received the following telegram Wednesday, June 7th; "The Secretary of War asks that I assure you of his deep sympathy in the loss of your son, Cpl. Hubert M. Hill. Report received states he was killed May 23 in Corsica. Letter follows. Signed Adjutant General."
Another fine Yuma county boy who has laid down his life that others might live in freedom. No words can assuage the grief of his mother, Mrs. Mary Hill, but the entire community mourns with this mother, brothers and sister in the loss of their son and brother.
Hubert M. Hill was born July 25, 1919 in Wray and grew to young manhood here. He graduated from the Wray High school with the class of 1938 and joined the Colorado National Guard May 28, 1940. He graduated from both armament and gunnery schools and transferred to the Air Corps September 15, 1940. Bert served in Brazil with the ferrying command in 1942 and in Africa in January 1943. He was assigned to duty in Corsica about April 1, 1944. His last letter was received by his mother Mrs. Hill, on April 29th. Bart leaves to mourn him five brothers, Stephen, Wallace and Harold of Spokane, Washington; Alton of Denver and Sam of Englewood; and one sister Mrs. Naomi Carrigan of Wray, beside many other less near relatives and friends.
Death strikes another name from the Yuma county's service list and another gold star signifies the terrible cost of war. Full particulars of just where Cpl. Hubert M. Hill made the supreme sacrifice are not available. But Mrs. Hill, Stephen, Wallace, Harold, Alton, Sam and Naomi walk not alone in their sorrow, the great common heart of us all mourns with them in their loss today.
