Carbonate

1883-1886

Founded in 1878 when 3 prospectors by the name of Bell, Blake and Cleiopfar discovered carbonate ore containing silver. It became the original county seat of Garfield County in 1883 and a tollroad was built to connect it to Glenwood Springs. Four months later the county seat was moved to Glenwood Springs, due to its location above timberline in the Flat Tops. Within a year the site was abandoned and only 2 cabins remain.

Carbondale

Founded in 1887 as a RR depot for Denver & Rio Grande RR, it was named after a town in PA of the same name. Much of the town burned in an 1891 fire, but it was rebuilt and now has a population of 5000.

Cardiff

1887-1920

located just S of Glenwood Springs, began as a coking facility for the railroad. It contained 50 coking ovens that began operations in 1888. Additional ovens were added when the town was purchased by Colorado Fuel & Iron Company in 1892, bringing the total ovens to 250. By 1920 Cardiff was a ghost town. The schoolhouse remains.

Spring Gulch

Also known as Gulch, it was an old coal mining camp just S of Marion. In 1906 a mine explosion killed 6 miners. The site is now private and access restricted.

Sunlight

1887-1912

Originally called Fourmile Creek, it was a coal mining camp to support the Sunset Mine, S of Glenwood Springs on 117RD. An explosion in 1897 killed about a dozen miners. Only one building remains.
