COGenWeb

Notes on lines these pages already print.

March and April 1996

The about page title is COGenWeb: About Us. The heading is About the COGenWeb Project. The body is a year-by-year account that begins in Kentucky in 1996, then a Colorado coordinator list, then the line This page was updated on September 9, 2021. The note on the three lists compares this list with the contact page and the front page. This note stays on the about page.

March and April, then June

The first heading is March/April 1996. In March and April 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea, originated by Jeff Murphy, was a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, with databases indexed and cross-linked so that a person found in more than one county could be located in the index. This pilot project became known as KYGenWeb.

The next heading is June 1996. As the Kentucky project was coming to completion, the page says, it was decided to expand to all states, and USGenWeb was born. Volunteers would coordinate county pages for each state page. Also in June, just 2 weeks or so after the beginning of The US GenWeb project, the World GenWeb project was begun.

The page spells USGenWeb as one word in one sentence and The US GenWeb in another. KYGenWeb is one word. World GenWeb is two words with GenWeb capitalised. The note keeps those spellings.

Jeff Murphy is named as the originator of the Kentucky idea. The paragraph does not give him a Colorado title. Colorado coordinators come later on the same page.

July, August, and September

July/August 1996 says the work progressed, the USGenWeb domain was established, and many new state mailing lists were generated. Through collaboration with RootsWeb, server space was found. A standardized Query and Surname entry form was established. Other servers and people named in that paragraph are Gene Stark at Gendex and the folks at Gensource.

September 1996 says some of the original cadre passed responsibilities to new helpers. The leadership of the US GenWeb project changed hands, but the original goal remains unchanged. A USGenWeb Bulletin Board was established. The paragraph credits state coordinators for new county pages.

Gene Stark is placed at Gendex. RootsWeb is the collaborator that provided server space. The Query and Surname form is called standardized. The paragraph does not print the form's fields.

RootsWeb, Gendex, and Gensource are names in the July/August paragraph. The Larimer page thanks Rootsweb, with a lowercase w, in a different sentence. The note on Larimer keeps that thank-you there. This paragraph is the about page's RootsWeb.

The September paragraph does not name the new leader. It says the leadership changed hands. The goal, it says, remains unchanged.

Into the Future, and Colleen Pustola

The heading Into the Future says the USGenWeb Project is organized by states and counties, each county having a coordinator. It says the project is supported by hundreds of volunteers all across the county. The word on the page is county, not country.

The COGenWeb Project is an outgrowth of this effort. If the county of interest does not have a page, the reader is asked to contact us. Volunteers are needed for home pages, for archives submitted by volunteers, and for transcribing public records. The closing question is Won't you join us?

Under that, the name Colleen Pustola is printed with the title COGenWeb Assistant State Coordinator. Assistant is the word on this page. The contact page uses a different pair of titles for her, and that difference is left to the list note.

The note on adoption wording quotes OPEN FOR ADOPTION from other pages. The about page instead says contact us if a county does not have a page, and it asks for volunteers.

Hundreds of volunteers is the page's own scale. all across the county is the printed phrase. Won't you join us? closes the section.

The past and present list

A heading reads Past & Present State Coordinators, with an ampersand. The lines under it are: Nancy Trice, Jun 1996-Aug 1996. Ronald Odis Singleton, Aug 1996-Jan 1997. John Gross, Jan 1997-Jun 1997. Teresa Davis, Jun 1997-Oct 1998. Lynn Waterman, Oct 1998-Sep 1999. Mary Ann Hetrick, Sep 1999-Jun 2006. Sundee C. Maynez, Jun 2006-2008. Gail Meyer Kilgore, May 2008-May 2021.

The months are three-letter forms: Jun, Aug, Jan, Oct, Sep, May. Sundee C. Maynez has a middle initial. Gail Meyer Kilgore's span is May 2008-May 2021, with no month-day.

The list ends with Kilgore. It does not add a name after May 2021. The page's own update line is This page was updated on September 9, 2021, which is after the end of that span. The note does not invent a successor.

Colleen Pustola is above the list, as Assistant State Coordinator, and she is not one of the eight dated lines. The dated lines are the past and present state coordinators. Her line is a separate title.

The eight spans use three-letter months. May 2021 ends the last span. September 9, 2021 is the update line, and it falls after May 2021.

September 9, 2021

This page was updated on September 9, 2021. The month is full, the day is a number, and a comma sits before the year. That is the about page's date. The front page footer is June 25, 2019. The contact page is October 23, 2019. Three pages, three update lines.

The about page also carries the shared disclaimer about personal copyright and public domain tombstone lists. The design credit on the about page is not the line this note is using. The coordinator list and the 1996 narrative are the body.

The front-page note has Lady of the Lake Design Studio under June 25, 2019. The about page's job in this note is the 1996 sequence and the eight coordinator spans.

KYGenWeb, USGenWeb, and COGenWeb are three names in one account. The page says COGenWeb is an outgrowth of the wider effort. It dates the Kentucky start to March and April 1996 and the wider start to June 1996.

September 9, 2021 uses a full month name. The spans above it use Jun, Aug, Jan, Oct, Sep, and May. The update line is not one of those spans.
